Sanctuary City says “NO”
to the ‘Summer of Love 50th Anniversary Concert’

City of San Francisco (6/3/2017) says no to our Summer of Love 50th Anniversary concert
denying a second permit application accusing us of advertising the concert without permission.
Other grounds for denial include the use of volunteers and refusing to use a production manager
handpicked by their permits department, a pretext to privatization
and cultural cooption of this event. Please see press page

Our latest permit was denied; our appeal will be Thursday June 15th at 10:00 am in City Hall room 416. We need everyone to show up and make their voices heard but please be polite. Their latest act is to pan off the “Hall of Flowers” event as ours which I found interesting (see Sam Whiting 6/7 article in the Chronicle). They can pretend all they want - but they are not us. They can have their make-pretend want-a-be event who knows they may even stumble into enlightenment along the way. A couple of players from the Starship are playing with Moonalice it’s not their fault please don’t take it out on them.

Please plan to be at the commission meeting on June 15th, it’s time to gather forces.

We have a right to congregate (1st amendment)

  • We are entitled to use the parks as San Franciscan’s
  • We have produced 3 major events in the Golden Gate Park with no problems (last one in 2009) we have proven we can promote a safe event and have done so 3 times.

The city’s onerous demands and conditions include:

  • We cannot use volunteers
  • We must hire someone to run the event from a list compiled by the Permits Department
  • We are not allowed to post the event date
  • We cannot advertise the concert until given permission
  • We must have a paid web master

SF Permits Department horrendous actions:

  • Intentionally delaying– application started 18 months ago.
  • Requiring us to adhere to different standards than other applicants
  • Privatizing access to the ‘commons’ not allowing us use of a public park
  • Denying local community groups while permitting large corporations
  • Imposing outrageous permit fees and costs in the hundreds of thousand
  • Refusing to meet with volunteer leaders, and denying us due process

SUMMER OF LOVE PROCLAMATION
There are moments in time when a word or thought has such power it changes history; a generation so involved in the moment it becomes unstoppable; a spiritual awakening so profound that its very conception shatters perceptions, halts the world and makes people from all nations take notice.

It began with a simple four-letter word
LOVE!
In the 1960s this word became synonymous with a generation and city called San Francisco. It was a concept, a belief deep in the hearts of all who were there (and those who wished they were).

It began with Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters and their bus “Furthur”, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the Beat Generation. They gathered in places like North Beach, Haight Ashbury, and in cities like Palo Alto, Berkeley, Seattle, Portland, New York and L.A. These pockets of counter-cultural, anti-establishment individuals questioned authority and their surroundings while searching for the real meaning of life and deeper truths. These small communities of like-minded individuals and their “families” of communal creativity focused on poetry, art, folk music, jazz, and rock ’n roll, demanding to be free of societal restrictions, restraints and hang-ups.
